Le mot de POP LIVRE

The chapters are very short, so the book moves fast despite its difficult subject — intimate partner abuse in a same-sex relationship. Read it for the craft as much as the story; there is nothing else quite like it.

Présentation

Carmen Maria Machado had a problem: the story she needed to tell — an abusive relationship with another woman — had almost no place in the archive she could consult. So she built her own form. In the Dream House proceeds in short chapters, each labelled with a genre: Dream House as Romance Novel, as Noir, as Choose Your Own Adventure, as Haunted House. The effect is not a gimmick but a method — it shows how a person under pressure reaches for the stories available to explain what is happening to her. Winner of the Rathbones Folio Prize in 2021, praised by the Observer, the Irish Times and the Economist, it has become a landmark of contemporary queer non-fiction.
