Carmen Maria Machado had a problem: the story she needed to tell — an abusive relationship with another woman — had almost no place in the archive she could consult. So she built her own form. In the Dream House proceeds in short chapters, each labelled with a genre: Dream House as Romance Novel, as Noir, as Choose Your Own Adventure, as Haunted House. The effect is not a gimmick but a method — it shows how a person under pressure reaches for the stories available to explain what is happening to her.
